Cleaning Up Our Community

The Environmental Club is leading the way to a greener future through its work in the community. Initially focusing on just the school campus, we have widened our reach and are working to clean up the New Haven Community!

How We Clean Our Community

Community Cleanups

Unfortunately our local community of New Haven has been victim to constant littering. Our parks, waterways, and town streets are pleagued with trash. The Environmental Club has sought to clean our environment by hosting/participating in community cleanups. We have worked in the space behind Wilbur Cross High School, East Rock Park, and the Mill River to remove all trash and foster a greener New Haven.

Found Art Competitions

The Wilbur Cross Environmental Club hosts an annual Found Trash Competition. This competition encourages students from Wilbur Cross to go out in their community and clean trash while also transforming that pile of trash into outlets of creative expression. So far we have seen fantastic creations, from pirate ships to light houses, all made out of trash found on the side of the road. We offer a cash prize to the winner to encourage a sense of competitive spirit and to incentivize the student body to participate.

Recycling Initiative

Our latest focus as a club is to reestablish the recycling at Wilbur Cross High School. whether on a district wide or school wide level we strive to protect our communities and landfills from the unnecessary waste of plastics. For a school that produces ample paper and plastic waste it seems only right to ensure that we properly dispose of that waste in an eco-friendly manner. As a club we have placed blue recycling bins on every floor of the building and our members collect the recyclable goods from each floor on a weekly basis. We then congregate the recycling together and bring it out to a special location on campus for it to be picked up by a recycling organization.

Fixing Community Gardens

By working to fix community gardens we hope to allow for the use of local gardens by both the school, for lunch or other culinary purposes, and for the broader community as means for growing healthy produce. So far we have worked mostly on gardens located on school campus however are looking to broaden our horizon to establish farming centers for public use throughout the city.
